The Portage is a seasonal property with up to 45 staff in summer and around 12 -15 staff in winter. In summer, our seasonal contracts are for 9 months, 6 months and 3 months.
Summer seasonal jobs are available for most roles in a hotel and provide an opportunity for a career hospitality person to gain worthwhile experience in another environment and for the traveller to earn funds for their trip around New Zealand.
There are also longer term roles at the hotel for 2 and 3 years periods for career people who wish to grow and develop in the industry.
Our staff wrote the Vision for the hotel. They were determined the Vision would be in simple words which truly explained what they came to work every day to do.

We want to make it great for our guests, so always find a way to give what they are looking for, and that's why everyone wants to come to The Portage.
We welcome people from all around the world. We look for people who have good hospitality experience, like to work in the industry and have travelled or had experience in a number of places.
There is accommodation at the hotel for staff doing early and late shifts. Day staff are encouraged to live in Picton and come to work daily on the staff boat.
