Art at the Portage
New Zealand’s finest artists and writers have visited The Portage over the past century, inspired and revived by the idyllic Marlborough Sounds location. The Portage Resort continues this tradition today in several ways, displaying the work of senior New Zealand fine artists, offering workshops in painting, printmaking and writing, and offering its exhibiting artists a restorative retreat from the world.
The artwork on display at The Portage is managed by The Diversion Gallery, a fine art gallery at Grove Mill Winery in Marlborough, which specialises in very collectible works and investment art by some of New Zealand’s most sought-after contemporary artists. It is beautifully complementary to The Portage experience of relaxation and inspiration. Background on these artworks is available at reception or in the rooms, or directly
from The Diversion Gallery director Barbara Speedy.

Artists on retreat
From time to time, you’ll encounter artists like Michael Smither, Don Binney, Wayne Seyb or Claire Beynon quietly drawing or writing from the balcony or a secluded corner of the gardens, or simply relaxing to restore their creative energy and impulse. We offer this opportunity to the artists represented by The Diversion Gallery, as a way of giving something back and contributing to New Zealand’s creative history. The Portage asks nothing of them in return, only that they treat it as a place to relax and revive.
Workshops for artists and writers
Every year we hold two or three workshops – in creative writing, painting and printmaking. If you would like advance notice, please contact us and we’ll make sure you hear about the next event. A favourite is the Creative Writing Retreat with Joan Rosier-Jones every year in May or early June. Ideas seem to fill the air over this weekend, as writers work on projects ranging from novels to short stories to non-fiction, guided and inspired by one of the country’s top creative writing tutors, novelist Joan Rosier-Jones.
Packing and delivery
The Diversion has extensive experience with packaging or crating and sending paintings and sculptures throughout New Zealand and overseas. Prices shown include Goods and Services Tax (12.5%), but exported works have this deducted.
